Sambuddha Duttagupta
"Sambuddha Duttagupta was born in 1956 in Darbhanga, Bihar, and completed his Diploma in Fine Arts in 1980 from the Indian College of Art & Draftsmanship, Kolkata. Over the course of his career, he has become a prominent figure in the Indian art world, known for his unique style that combines traditional and contemporary elements. His early works were showcased in several prestigious group exhibitions at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and AIFACS, New Delhi, marking the beginning of a prolific artistic journey.
Duttagupta has participated in numerous important exhibitions across India, including the Bharat Bhawan Biennial Exhibition in Bhopal (1985) and the National Exhibition of Art at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (1985). He has been a frequent exhibitor at the Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata, from 1982 to 2001, and his work has been displayed at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata, both in solo and group shows. His exhibitions span over four decades, contributing significantly to the visibility of contemporary Indian art.
In addition to group shows, Duttagupta has held several solo exhibitions, including a 1989 exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, and a notable multimedia exhibition at Birla Academy of Art & Culture in 2004. His works have evolved with time, reflecting a deep engagement with various forms of visual expression, from traditional painting to digital art. His 2007 exhibition Dreams of Liberation at Birla Academy was one of his standout solo projects.
Beyond exhibitions, Sambuddha Duttagupta has also been actively involved in public art and mural projects, most notably a mural project with physically challenged children at the Rehabilitation Center for Children in Behala, Kolkata. He has led workshops across India, including at Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi, Welham Boys School in Dehradun, and Max Mueller Bhawan in Kolkata. These activities highlight his commitment to art's role in education and community development.
His works are housed in several prominent collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and Lalit Kala Akademi. Duttagupta’s contributions to Indian art, both through his exhibitions and public projects, have solidified his place as an influential artist, with his work resonating with collectors and art enthusiasts both in India and internationally."
